ABOUT

With the Russia-Ukraine War raging for seven months and counting, the Ukrainian people is in immense agony and require continuous close attention and support from communities worldwide. Blank Space Studio, a Hong Kong theatre company, took the initiative to translate and perform the play Bad Roads by Ukrainian playwright Natalya Vorozhbit shortly after the outbreak of the War earlier this year, to raise funds for the people victimized by the War and dictatorship. This October, the company is organizing, on an expanded scale, the UKR/HK Playreading Festival to present multifaceted perspectives to the Hong Kong audience, inviting one to explore deeper into the relationship between Russia and Ukraine through a wider historical context, so as to understand the world through theatre.

In response to the Worldwide Ukrainian Play Readings Program launched by the international veteran theatre critic and director John Freedman, the Festival will take place on two weekends presenting 6 productions, each with 2 performances, created by 7 directors and 28 performers adapting and performing works by 12 Ukrainian playwrights. The Festival is by far the largest Ukrainian playreading fundraising event in Asia. In addition, guest speakers will be invited to give post-performance discussions, allowing the audience to communicate directly with local Ukrainian people. Ticket starts at $110, with net proceeds donating to support the Evacuation Helpline for Ukrainians, Helping to Leave, and The Journalism Emergency Fund for Ukraine, the 24.02 FUND.
